This simple to make Sugar Free Blueberry Chia Protein Smoothie is really a meal in itself. Spinach, blueberries and Greek yogurt are combined with my all time favorite seeds, chia seeds and sunflower seeds. It not only pack an amazing nutritional punch but it tastes delicious as well. There is the option to include hemp seeds as well if you wish to. I like to use frozen fruit in my smoothies so that it thickens the smoothie up but you can use fresh fruit as well.
Nutritional Benefits
This smoothie is ideal for a snack, for breakfast or for a post workout drink. It is a great source of many vitamins and minerals but in particular is high in protein, anti-oxidants, magnesium and those amazing essential Omega-3 fatty acids. Combine this with the fact that this is anti-inflammatory, full of fibre and a real energy boosting drink, and you know you have a winning recipe. So this is a recipe that is full of nutritional goodness and it actually tastes amazing as well. If you add hemp hearts/seeds to this recipe you will give this a real boost of protein, antioxidants and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Protein Powder
I have added protein powder to this recipe, which you could omit if you wished to. If you don’t use the protein powder in this drink then I would use a creamier base such as coconut cream or almond milk as the liquid base instead of water, other wise the smoothie is going to be too watery. The vanilla protein powder also adds sweetness to this smoothie so if you don’t add any, you might want to add some additional fruit for sweetness or even a little sweetener. I would try the smoothie first before adding anything for additional additional sweetness though as the berries might make it sweet enough for you.
If you buy protein powder, just make sure that it is low carb. My preferred protein powders include Gold Standard and they have a couple of delicious vanilla flavors available that I love. All of the vanilla flavored ones I’ve bought have been really good. I generally buy it from iHerb or source it for as cheap as I can online. There is also a great product called Isopure that is a zero carb protein powder that you can also source from Iherb. Both of these protein powders come in many different flavors.
